IMPLICATIONS OF NIGERIA-CHINA TRADE RELATIONS ON THE ECONOMY OF KANO STATE

Abstract

Nigeria and China have established diplomatic relations in 1971. This relations between the two countries had blossomed and progressed over the years from political to a more intense economic and trade penetration of the Nigerian markets. However, China seemed to be driven by it’s crave for economic gain and development to creating conditions necessary for Nigerian trade dependence on China. This was made possible through economic favours to Nigeria, investments, importations, and trade domination in the Nigerian markets, manipulation of products quality and price as well as over bearing political influence of China over the Nigerian policy institutions. This study, using combined theories of strategic trade theory, liberal theory and moderate dependency theory examine the implications of Nigeria-China trade relations on the economy of Kano. It’s also assessed how Nigeria’s trade dependence on China implicates the economy of Kano State markets as the case in point. The study is based on qualitative method of data collection and its employs semi-structured interview to gather information from the respondents. A purposive sampling technic is used to select fifteen (15) respondents from both the Kano state ministry of trade and investment and the Kano State textile markets respectively to examine the implications of Nigeria-China trade relations as its sample size. The data collected for the study through interview were thematically content analyzed. Therefore, the finding reveals that the implications of Chinese trade penetrations in to the Nigerian markets in Kano State influences the Nigeria’s trade dependence on China. Similarly, ineffective policy administration further conditioned the Kano State trade dependence on China particularly in textile market economy. Both internal and external conditions created by the Nigeria-China trade relations lead to Nigerian trade dependence on China. Therefore, the study recommended ways of enhancing the implications of Nigeria-China trade relations on the economy of Kano State through improve policy mechanism on the part of Nigeria’s trade relations with China in Kano State and in order to achieve mutually beneficial relations.
