DETERMINANTS OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE USE IN MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

People are exposed to the dangers of traditional medicine with its attendant consequences daily. Clients often complain of itching, diarrhea, stomach ache, and rashes etc. Yet they continue to patronize traditional medical practitioners and practices. This health-seeking behaviour need to be investigated. The study adopted a descriptive method in which quantitative technique was applied Sample sizes of four hundred (400) respondents who are adults between the ages of 20-65 years were selected using Yamane’s formula. Three hundred and eighty-four (384) questionnaires were retrieved, making 96% return rate. The study employed descriptive and inferential statistics for data analysis. Some of the findings of the study revealed that socio-economic factors were the major determinants of traditional medicine use.. The study concludes that socio-economic factors such as income, occupation, place of residence and educational status were determinants of traditional medicine use.
