Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) on smallholder rice farmers in Dutse Local Government Area. It investigated how involvement in the programme shaped beneficiaries’ livelihoods and the extent to which access to extension services affected their productivity. The research also identified key challenges faced by smallholder rice farmers, including issues with farm inputs, market access, credit, and low youth involvement in rice farming. The study therefore, theoretically evaluates the effect of the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme (ABP) on smallholder rice farmers in Dutse Local Government Area. Findings showed that ABP beneficiaries in Dutse LGA had better access to credit and markets, and experienced moderate improvements from extension services, leading to higher yields and incomes. However, the study also revealed challenges such as low youth participation, delays in input supply, and irregular credit disbursement. The study concludes that although ABP has contributed positively to rice farming in Dutse LGA, its sustainability hinges on addressing these challenges through stronger implementation and improved policy support.
