EVALUATING THE INCIDENCE OF POVERTY AMONG UNEMPLOYED AND UNMARRIED WOMEN IN NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA

Abstract

The study investigated the incidence of poverty among unemployed and unmarried women in North Central Nigeria. Employing a descriptive research design, quantitative primary data was obtained, through a questionnaire survey, from a multistage sample of 384 individuals in the region. A Chi-square Goodness of Fit test was carried out to analyse the collected primary data. The study's outcomes indicated a high incidence of poverty among the population of unemployed and unmarried demographic of women in the North Central and a statistically, as confirmed by a statically significant results obtained from sample analysis. It is, therefore, crucial that government initiate and support livelihood diversification programs specifically tailored for poor unmarried and unemployed females in North Central Nigeria. These programs should encompass training and resources for income-generating activities aligned with the skills and capacities of women, thereby offering alternative sources of income beyond conventional avenues.
